Horses and mules vanishing on American farms decline continues
The article notes a sharp drop in farm horses and mules from World War I highs to 11,455,000 today, with 14,481,000 recorded on January 1, 1940. It cites wartime demand and economic shifts as factors behind the steady disappearance.
Decline in Horse and Mule Populations Driven by Machinery
The major cause is displacement by power-driven farm equipment as costs rise. Fewer colts are raised, average animal age climbs, and death losses rise. High export demand and CCC UNRRA purchases push horses abroad, while slaughter remains heavy to meet meat needs.

Fruit Trees Add To Farm Home Yard
Auburn article quotes W A Ruffin urging fruit trees as part of home life. He notes orchards need little space and should be fertilized pruned and sprayed. Plant on good soil near the house and avoid low flat areas to prevent spring freezes from harming blossoms.
