Tompkins urges focus on Negro education and school reform
In a club talk, educator Tompkins traced Dothan’s growth since the century’s start, recalled early politics in schools, and warned of the perils of political meddling. He urged better funding, facilities, and teacher pay, arguing educated Negroes require real opportunity rather than votes. The talk covered tenure law, family dynamics in schools, and course planning for college entry, with several local officials attending.
