John McHale a CWA worker, was arrested after returning to the Bronx where his family lived. District Attorney Foley said McHale appeared hopelessly insane and ordered hospitalization. He confessed to striking the children with a hammer while claiming he believed they were alive. He said he feared they were not getting enough to eat while out of work.
