Atlantic City reports a new method to detect tuberculosis infection within three to four days after exposure. The test uses a phosphatid from tuberculosis germs, isolated by Yale and tested at Rockefeller Institute, with further refinement of tuberculin by Chicago scientists. The work involves Yale, Rockefeller, Chicago, and 17 institutions in a seven year national cooperative effort led by Dr. William Charles White.
Chairman O'Connor of the United States Shipping Board estimates that in the next year more tonnage will be under construction in American shipyards than at any time since the war period. Many vessels will be large and of types newly undertaken on this side of the Atlantic.
In Toronto on May 28 the American Picotra chemical society heard a description of using cadmium to protect steel from corrosion. The metal provides luster and a galvanized-like dull coating, offering a soft tactile feel while remaining hard. R L Westbrook of Grasselli Chemical described the coating process. The report also notes that 14 of 53 mammal species once in the Chicago district have disappeared.
