General Report on War Maneuvers and Airborne Tactics
The General reports on the Swarmer exercise describe lessons shaping future war strategy. Vast airpower, 600 aircraft, and months of planning aided a maneuver showing aircraft delivering troops and supplies. Piloted paratroopers and forward ground controllers improved close air support. The Fairchild C-119 cargo plane proved adaptable for troop drops and supply runs. A need emerged for airborne tanks and assault planes to handle rough terrain, potentially forming a unified ground task force under a Joint Chiefs command.
