Washington AP reports the loss of the destroyer Frederik C. Davis to a submarine in the Atlantic. Navy spokesmen said the sinking occurred some days before Germany’s surrender. The ship served in the Mediterranean 1944 and participated in Anzio and southern France invasions. Built for Consolidated Stell Corp, Orange Texas, commissioned July 14, 1943, she was named after Ensign Frederick C. Davis killed at Pearl Harbor. The crew’s families were notified.
Staff Sergeant Douglas MacArthur Hayes formerly of Dothan is due back in the U S from Hal y where he has served as an A 26 gunner since May 1944 He completed 54 missions by Germanys surrender earning the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster He is the son of Mrs Veronica Hayes a Molina Junior High teacher His brother John R Hayes is a medical student at Emory University and interning at Georgia Baptist Hospital The Hayes family lived at 700 West Main St until school closes at Molina on June 1 Mrs Hayes will return to Auburn where Sgt Hayes will enter the APU after the war end.
Geneva voters unanimously approved building a new high school on Campbell Hill site already hosting the stadium and vocational building. County superintendent J. J. Collins said state architect will visit Geneva June 5 to draft plans. Hartford elementary contract let June 5 with completion by September 29. Tate project nearly finished, Collins reported.
U S carrier planes struck Kyushu and Shikoku targets in a high intensity raid. Bombing damaged airfields at Kofuji Use Izumi Tachiarai Chiran Omura Hitoyoshi and others on Kyushu plus Kokubo Kanoya Chiran Kagoshima and Shikoku airfields. One barrage balloon fell. Ships not found. other targets damaged include an oil train, locomotives, a railroad station, a chemical plant and large buildings. The strike, described by Adm J J Clark as the most damaging by fast carrier forces, followed inland sea raid on March 19.

Lieut John Pilcher son of Mr and Mrs John E Pilcher Sr of St Andrews Pena mae City was prisoner in Germany for six months. Red Cross reports him liberated with relatives in Dothan noting he was shot down over Germany as B 17 co pilot and held since November.
PARIS AP The U S Army moves to shift millions of tons of World War II materiel from Europe to the Pacific theater. Brig Gen Morris W Gilland says V E Day leaves 5 5 million tons of supplies on the Continent with 700 000 tons of ammunition and over a million items from locomotives to tools. Major effort will repair, pack, and ship assets, with the Quartermaster and others detailing large scale revamps and weatherproofing.
