A German air attack on the English coast near midnight involved a large force reportedly around 300 planes. British claims say many Nazis were shot down as coastal towns endured bomb blasts and airfield damage in a second straight night of raids.
Fire at Elevator Milling Company on Montgomery highway destroys the grain elevator and feed-stuff valued around 0,000. The blaze began in a store rear of the building, fed by hay and shelled corn. The 55-foot high structure and 60-foot shed suffered extensive damage. loss estimated at 5,000 for building, 1,500 for stored goods. Owner R Burger blamed insurance limits and rapid spread. repair timelines extend to about three days. Chief Ziglar led fire crews, origin undetermined.

The city police report a theft of ten dozen eggs left at headquarters for two officers. Former detective Henry Atkins delivered the eggs Saturday night, selling them to Detective Wes Herring and Ralph Chalker of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The eggs disappeared by morning from Chief J E Craughton's office.
Sheriff B G Farmer said two Negroes Hosea Koonce and Jester Glenn were arrested yesterday on a robbery charge related to the alleged hold up of Coley Dubose Sunday in the eastern city. Deputy Adams said Dubose reported they drove up in a car near the railroad tracks and forced him to surrender more than 100 dollars won gambling.
James M. Long reports from Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces in England that the Allied news corps, over 300 strong and expanding, will cover the invasion of Europe as the war’s largest single story. Brig. Gen. T. J. Davis leads the PR setup, coordinating correspondents from Russia, China, fighting France, and other Allied nations. He notes about 347 are accredited to SHAEF with map-hung plan rooms full of invasion images.
Graceville police report one of four bandits who tried to rob the Bank of Graceville was captured, identified as Carl Howard Franklin of Panama City. The other three fled in a blue sedan. getaway car stolen from Panama City shipyards. Franklin was arrested about 20 minutes after the hold up, two miles from Graceville.
Soviet High Command reported Russian air forces sank three transports totaling 19 000 tons off Kirkenes after catching a convoy of 41 ships. Two transports and an escort were damaged as German rail depots and trains across several cities were attacked. Counterattacks and near-term clashes were noted on the lower Dnestr and northwest of Tyraspol with mixed results for both sides.
Dr M A Davie told Rotary members that all but one type of cancer can be removed by treatment. He cited melancholic sarcoma as rare and noted Alabama cancer control coverage with 63 of 67 counties organized and an appropriation of 357,000 for hospital treatment this year.

Representatives of War Bond District Ten will meet in Detk on May 26 to diaruas preliminary plans for launching the Fifth War Loan drives June 12. State leaders in War Bond activities say the national quota is 16 billion dollars though state and county targets are not yet set. Houston County hosts at the Houston Hotel at 4 30 p m with B P Poyner Sr as chairman. Ed Leigh McMillan Brewton says the drive will require more solicitations and a larger quota than before with broader organization. Attending are Frank P Samford Marc Ray Clements W B H Mahan and George T Sargent.
Washington report notes renewed Senate inaction after a 35 vote against banning state poll taxes for federal elections. NAACP leader Walter White denounces the move as a farce, arguing the tax suppresses Black voters in the South and traces back to slavery era symbolism.
Southeast Asia headquarters in Kandy reports a fresh Japanese thrust near Imphal was repulsed ten miles west of Daletme and three miles east of the India frontier in the Kaladan Valley. British tanks also fought in the Kohima area while mopping up and allied forces counted about 300 Japanese dead as 15 bunkers were destroyed.

California and New Jersey Democrats backed a fourth term for President Roosevelt, while Republicans split. New Jersey delegates favored Dewey, with 33 opposition candidates openly backing him. A crash eight miles south of Geneva near the Florida line killed three people and injured others. Bud Kyzer 22 Edgar Wenderman 16 and Harvey Dorsey Negro of Hartford died from the collision. A second truck carrying defense workers was involved and the injured were not named. Patrolman Zack Morris said the crash occurred around 5 am and involved a Hartford driver James Wilata Hodgen and a truck heading to Panama City Florida. The other victim names were not immediately released.
