County sets five cent gas tax fee for collector in city
George Whittington and county commissioners voted yesterday to retain a five cent gas tax collection fee with the county paying a collector over 200 dollars a month. The remainder goes to the general fund to offset various edges. The setup, approved by City Commissioners Norris Malone and John Adkins, drew objections from President Jim Brennan. Brennan warned the city may incur losses while the county gains, as the new arrangement shifts fee proceeds between municipalities. Lonnie Granger of Cottonwood currently holds the collector position, with a part time clerk handling books and a reported 400 dollars in monthly fees over six months.

Voters May Not Get Say On Tax Issues
MONTGOMERY AP The governor's tax and spend program may face a bleak path to voter approval with even sponsors doubtful a advisory referendum will pass. Some lawmakers fear a referendum shifts responsibility from lawmakers. Debate centers on constitutional powers to tax and legal questions about an advisory vote. Supporters argue a statewide vote would pressure the legislature to heed public wishes on pensions roads and education funding. The article notes the possibility of pursuing a constitutional amendment and the risk that anti adminstration legislators say a vote would deny the administration. The piece ends noting a continuation on page 2.
