May 10 AP dispatch reports President Ayala using congressional authority to declare war on Bolivia. Public demonstrations surge, marking formal warfare after months of border conflict over Grimchaco. Intermittent fighting had long kept both nations armed.
The New York state labor department estimates sixteen thousand workers found new jobs in April. Reports from railroads show higher carloadings and steel output rising to about thirty one percent. Housing demand persists and business failures show improvement across regions.
A dynamite bomb with a lit fuse was found in the Savannah City Hall rotunda on Tuesday near Mayor Thomas Gamble’s office. Thomas A. Ht, who reported the device, helped cut the fuse and call police. Pruitt, detained for questioning, noted a rough brown wrapper and a red pencil note addressed to May Gamble, Alderman Wilson and F. Downing.

Bloom, rehabilitation chairman of the Alabama American Legion, says hundreds of disabled Alabama veterans eligible for hospitalization have not applied due to confusion over the Economy Act. Veterans may apply at the U S Veterans Hospital in Tuscaloosa or at Birmingham regional offices to determine hospitalization status.
The Alabama Public Service Commission will hear Southern Railroad petition on May 19 to discontinue trains 23 and 24 between Selma and Mobile. The line shows a 12 month revenue of $35,015.24 against expenses of $45,102.42, an operating loss of $11,187.18. Protests have been filed by Mobile merchants and a Baptist minister of Catherine.
Parents are invited to attend a Mothers Day program at the Smyrna church Sunday night at 7 30 oclock announced by church officers. Special music will be provided by Lloyd Cherry of Dothan.
R B White was elected president of the Western Union Telegraph company on Tuesday replacing Carlton. The announcement came from New York where the company is headquartered and listed under the AP dispatch.
Former President Herbert Hoover and Mrs Hoover settle into routine life in Palo Alto California. He enjoys long walks and mining reminiscences while Mrs Hoover shops in San Francisco and resumes Girl Scout ties. They plan summer fishing trips and limited entertaining as they ease from public duties.
The Tuscaloosa city board of education announced a 7-4 plan changing the junior high into an elementary school and reducing grades from 12 to 11. The move aims to ensure a nine month term next year with economy measures and salary reductions.
Geneva May 10 report shows R F C project employees in Geneva county earned 15 356 10 in April. The Alabama Relief Administration listed 2 752 applications on file with 310 new, 279 recommended for work, 52 for direct relief, six given medicine, 213 removed from work, 33 off direct relief, 538 03 spent for direct relief, 62 60 for medicine, total 600 63 on medicine and relief, and 1 743 workers employed.
President Roosevelt appointed Eugene Black as governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, succeeding Eugene Meyer who ends his tenure started in 1930 by Hoover. Black takes office at the close of business today.
The final report of Captain Victor A. Tidman of the Salvation Army home will be given this afternoon at a Salvation Army Board of Directors meeting at Foster Street Methodist church at 5 o'clock. Tidman will leave next week for Anniston to take charge of the army home.
In Florence Alabama a new Muscle Shoals Game and Fish Protectors Club formed with 46 charter members. F W Irvine is president and C H Jackson vice president with W G Beadles as treasurer and Dr T L Bennett Sr secretary. Representative Homer L Reeder spoke on conservation of game and fish as development era ahead. The group pledged to obey state laws and cooperate with wardens to enforce them.
Montgomery May 10 AP The last link in the Bankhead Highway between Birmingham and Atlanta should be completed by September 1. Officials say 48 miles from Birmingham to the Georgia line are 4 percent done, with the route running via Leeds Pell City Anniston and Heflin to the Georgia line. The Tuskegee to Auburn section nears finish and could open by August 1, giving Montgomery to Atlanta paved access. Other pave projects lack definite completion dates.
Montgomery May 10 AP Maxwell Field officials solved the parachute theft mystery. Post police arrested a local airport employee named Smith who led them to a hotel where his wife was converting the parachutes into dresses.
The stock market rose on a fresh buying wave with early gains in industrial activity and employment boosting confidence. Prices climbed one to four dollars in the first half hour led by United States Steel above 48, American Telephone over 102, DuPont near two, and General Motors about one. cotton also rose, while steel orders limited gains later.
A report from Belzoni Mississippi says an unidentified group deliberately cut the levee two miles above the town on Wasp Lake. The breach ends a two week lull marked by militia patrols and recent dynamiting of dykes and night attacks in the delta flood zone.
A large crowd of singers from the county attended a Sunday sing at the courthouse. J F Patterson opened the meeting with prayer by G L Peckley. Multiple leaders led the first four lessons, including Mathias Culpepper Pope and Vickers Helma in the first and Deal Branton Martin Harrison Spivey Bullard in the second.
Ralph Lake drilling supervisor at the O Henry Fields Cottonwood was ordered held for the next grand jury after a preliminary hearing in common pleas court Judge Keener Kraxley presided. Evidence showed he sold stock in a well and did not turn over the funds. stock sold to Arthur Pappas for 300 dollars. Lake remains free on bond.
Misa Agnes Hardwick received a 200 judgment in circuit court against A E Malone for 19 000 damages from an automobile crash. Emma Hardwick, her mother, was awarded 409 by agreement in a 5 000 suit for loss of time during the injury period. Suits filed yesterday.
Geneva county selects Clint G. Mc Carty of Hartford as tax collector succeeding A. D. Childs who died last week at his home in Geneva.
Minnie joined the Houston county health department payroll today to support malaria study and pond insect control. She arrives with three assistants to observe tadpole development and feed insects as officials test an untried method to combat malaria mosquito habitats.
A Visitors Day exhibit at Dothan High includes manual training items such as two four poster walnut beds cedar chests tables lamps shelves bookcases and chairs plus a Grace Darling bed and a Dolly Madison spool bed. Prizes reward top manual training and home economics projects with judges named and time set for 9 50 a.m.
Miami May 10 AP seizure of 76000 rounds of ammunition at Tavanie r 75 miles south of Miami off the Florida coast by U S customs border patrolmen confirmed after Sidney Brown Tampa collector announced. The ammunition of .44 caliber suitable for pistols or two types of foreign rifles. Federal authorities declined to release details saying work not complete. F R Russell in charge said full information could be made public tomorrow. Authorities refused to say if ammunition was destined for shipment outside the United States.
The American Bible Society reports new translations including Mudang a dialect of Africa and a gospel portion of St Mark into Mudang. A full New Testament in Sea Dyak, spoken by Borren tribes, joins 936 languages with complete Bibles in 174, portions in 572 and other selections.
Dr. D. W. Haskew pastor of Lafayette Street Methodist church addressed Young Junior High School chapel exercises this morning on the power of music.
At least 63 people are dead and many injured after a series of tornadoes across Tennessee and Kentucky. Beaty Swamps near Livingston reports 26 dead, with Tompkinsville Kentucky and Columbia Kentucky among towns hit hard. Communication lines are down and total damage is undetermined.
T Anthony a wood cutting crew worker for the unemployment agency was seriously hurt when a heavy limb fell from a tree near Beaver Creek. He was brought to a hospital, unconscious at first but regained consciousness. doctors ruled no skull fracture. Agency officials deem the accident unavoidable.
The District of Columbia supreme court allowed one libel action by Brigadier General Samuel T. Ansell to proceed while a slander suit against Senator Huey P. Long was dismissed. The suits sought 500000 dollars each over leaflets Long allegedly distributed and remarks in the senate. Justice James M. Proctor refused to quash service of process on Long in the libel case.
J. W. Gilbert a mail carrier for route six was stricken on his route this morning and brought to a local hospital. The hospital did not announce the nature of his illness or any planned operation by press time.
An earthquake of sufficient intensity to cause damage was recorded along the California Nevada line near Bishop. The seismic event occurred at the Carnegie Institute Seismological Laboratory at 1 47 PM Pacific standard time Tuesday.
St. Petersburg reporting on Louis J. Smith veteran airman who is crafting further plans for a New York to Paris and return flight. Smith had originally intended to depart at once for New York and continues to refine the route and arrangements.
