Fire rips Durant Line pier. one dead, many injured

In York on May 7 a massive fire and a collapsed 1,000 foot pier caused over $2 million in damage. A bystander died from a fractured skull after a hose line burst. Chief John McEligott and about 300 firefighters suffered injuries from heat and smoke. The blaze began in the boiler room under the pier and burned for more than 20 hours before under control.

Soldiers' Bonus Measure Buried in Congress

Washington May 7 AP The cash bonus plan is deemed dead for this session after the House Ways and Means Committee voted 15 to 10 against proposals to pay veterans 2 billion dollars in cash. The panel rejected the Patman plan and even moved to redeem veteran certificates, delaying any discharge petition. President Hoover denounced the bill and the committee’s action blocks a House vote until next December or June 10 at earliest.

Unemployment Relief Office Moves In East Troy Street

The Unemployment Relief bureau moved from the S.R.M. building on East Main to the Old Eagle building on East Troy street to coordinate flour distribution with American Red Cross aid. Office hours stay 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Applicants must have moved to Hotton county before January 1 this year and head of family must apply. Sixty nine registrants, including 22 white and one Negro aged about 92, spoke of hardship. The relief committee continues work cutting timber for a road and has about 100 cords left. The Thursday Luncheon Club donated fifteen dollars to aid operations, with 319 registrations to date.

Host of Athletes Compete at Meet

More than a hundred high school athletes competed at the first annual district track meet held at the stadium sponsored by Nathan High School. Jimmie Calloway to box in Florida state elimination

Jimmie Calloway of Dothan now a boxing instructor at the Florida Military Institute in Haynes City has signed to enter the Florida state elimination in Tampa on May 13. Gean Calloway his father and manager announced the plan. The Tampa event directed by promoter Kennedy covers fighters from 118 to 147 pounds and Calloway will box biweekly until defeated or crowned Florida bantamweight champion.
