Many Houston Births Remain Unreported
The State Health Department estimates only about 36 percent of white births and 68.9 percent of Negro births in Houston County excluding Dothan are reported. Dothan estimates are 87.4 percent for white births and 44 percent for Negro births. The estimate comes from a 1940 check during census numerator questions and later verifications, and officials say completeness has likely not changed materially since then.

Dr. Albert H. Collins, OPA district director in Montgomery, explained tighter sugar controls for months ahead. Restaurants, hotels, institutional and industrial users have also seen cuts. He warned Europe’s liberation and rising civilian and military demands push consumption beyond allocations, making curtailment essential as U S supplies grow increasingly dependent on current production.
