Labor Secretary Perkins met for two and a half hours with Lewis and operators over a bituminous wage dispute. Ministers proposed about an eight point increase. operators offered $1.00 daily raise to temps, rejected by Lewis. Perkins said she expects a settlement by Saturday and may join talks today.
A congressional hearing discussed meat shortages as OPA ceilings and higher government sale prices take effect. Officials warned the industry faces worsening conditions despite April 1 beef subsidy and pork price rises. Two cases of Tularemia were on record at the Houston County Health Department today. The disease, sometimes called frabbit fever, is transmitted to humans by infected animals and the patients are described as Negro residents of the county.
County War Price and Rationing Beserd officials announced that all certificates issued before December 1 will be valid for tire transfers after April 1. Consumers holding such certificates were warned to use them before Sunday.
