A wave of extortion notes reached prominent figures in Washington including Mrs. Alice Roosevelt Longworth and Ben Lyon. House Committee Seeks New Revenue After Tax Rejection

The House Ways and Means Committee formed a subcommittee to draft proposals to raise about 600 million dollars after the house struck the 2.25 percent manufacturers tax. The sales tax was removed by a 723 to 153 vote. Acting Chairman Crisp said the subgroup would present proposals by Monday.

Fund for Dothan Girl Raises Money for TB Treatment

Donations to aid a Dothan girl with tuberculosis total $117.75 with about $00 more needed for life saving treatment. First day contributions reached $81. A large package was sent to The Eagle. List of donors includes G. M. Lewis $10 and Dr. H. Green $25 among many others.

Alabama 4H Girls Health Day planned statewide

About 16 000 Alabama girls enrolled in 4H Clubs will join Health Day programs on May 1 under Miss Helen Johnston. They will partner with the American Child Health Association and county health units to announce county health champions and feed into a state contest in Auburn and onward to a national competition in Chicago. Last year’s state winner was Nell Moore of Bullock County. In 1931 health screenings reached 7,977 girls and women with 787 improving posture and 5,687 immunized, while 2,330 homes were screened and 2,352 families joined fly and mosquito control campaigns.

Special Prosecutor In Seed Loan Cases Heads to Washington

Rancher fires shot during auction at 101 Ranch mansion

Maryland Oklahoma March 24 AP Colonel Zack Miller a rancher and showman fired a shotgun to scare two lawyers during the sale of 101 Ranch properties under foreclosure. He barricaded himself in the White House, then allowed access as the auction continued amid tensions and illness.

Thieves Rifle Cash Register of Dothan Store Early Today

Thieves entered the Green Grocery Co. in Dixie by raising a window and rifled the cash register, taking $2.50 and three cartons of cigarettes. W. P. Green, proprietor, reported the burglary. Officer James Herring found the scene around 2 a.m. No arrests had been made.

Couple narrowly escape death as car erupts in flames

Mr and Mrs I D Marlow of Dothan were riding on the Alabama Florida highway near Dothan when their car suddenly burst into flames. The vehicle owned by J A McKinnon city street foreman was destroyed with chassis badly damaged by the blaze. Start of the fire is unknown.

Appeal Filed For Rehearing In Alabama Death Case

George Chamlee filed applications for a rehearing before the Alabama supreme court of appeals for seven Negroes sentenced to death for the Paint Rock attack on two white girls. The court had affirmed lower court judgment and set May 13 for execution, with one defendant granted a new trial. Chamlee warned of U S Supreme Court action if rehearing is denied.

Unemployed Men Need Shoes and Clothes, Agency Says

Unemployed men, earning five cents an hour chopping wood, wear worn shoes or no soles. Officials at the unemployment agency urge the public to donate old shoes and clothes, calling for calls to 37 to arrange pick up. The agency lacks funds to buy clothing while providing groceries to families. Some men work under agency direction planting gardens or chopping wood, and sales of chopped wood were reported by unemployment headquarters.

Health Officials To Examine Negro Schools Here Soon

Haveton county health officer Tr. F. OG. Granger announced examinations of thirteen Negro schools will begin soon. Three are in Dothan and ten in the county. Examinations will cover smallpox and typhoid. White schools have recently been inspected.

The University of Alabama welcomed 10 southern university and college presidents or representatives for a two day meeting of the Southern Regional Committee of the Social Sciences Research Council. Crippled Dothan Boy Returns From Hospital

Samuel Skipper three returned today from a Birmingham hospital where doctors treated his club feet. Welfare officials said the Alabama Crippled Children's Society funded the treatment. the only expense to welfare was transport to the hospital.
