Illinois Boxing Ban Delay Sparks Court Fight
Illinois Athletic Commission delayed until next Monday action on Governor Green’s recommendation to suspend professional boxing in Illinois through April 7. If ban proceeds, it will likely trigger court challenges from attorneys for Irving Kaovin and Mitchell Sandler over a planned 10 round title bout between welterweight Ray Robinson and Georgie Abrams set for March 31. The April 7 deadline accompanies a $10 000 benefit for Sam Baroudi’s parents after his Feb 21 ring death in a 10th round knockout, a death that drew criticism of the commission and state boxing code.
