Ten Billion Dollars In Reparations Demanded Of Germany By Russia

Congress in Washington debates postwar reparations with a proposal to raise income tax exemptions from 500 to 700 to relieve low earners. Rep Forand D Rhode Island argues the measure would remove 5 million “little fellows” from taxes, costing the government 3 billion in revenue, while a rival 29 percent income tax cut by Rep Knutson would save about 3.5 billion. Truman To End Vacation Shortly

President Truman will end his Florida vacation Wednesday afternoon and fly back to Washington on his Sacred Cow after lunch. Weather limited beach time. he plans to attend a newsreel screening at the base theatre and may walk the base if needed. He enjoyed his daughter Margaret's radio debut and phoned relatives before resuming White House duties.

Minister's Auto Fire False Alarm In City

Firemen answered a call to the Rev. C. H. Hildreth on South Appletree street last night but found a false alarm the car had the emergency brake on and smoking when parked. Earlier this morning firefighters found no damage at 300 West North street where a fire started in a room from a heater but was stopped quickly.

Cremation of Goering and 10 Nazis Revealed

United Press details the October 16 cremation of Hermann Goering and 10 other top Nazi leaders at Ostfriedhof in Munich. Eleven bodies were burned in a Bavarian crematorium, with ashes dispersed into a Munich stream, as U.S. Army kept the events secret to prevent a shrine for followers. Photographs of the dispersal are now being offered for sale in the United States.

J R Baggett 58 Dies Here After Short Illness

J R Baggett aged 58 died at 800 East Lafayette Street after a brief illness. Funeral at his home led by Rev C H Hildreth with burial in City cemetery. He was a barber for 30 years and member of Lafayette Street Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, three sons Rex, Felix, and Dan, a daughter Mrs W J Pace, two brothers C C Baggett and H H Baggett, a sister Mrs Alva Howell, and one grandchild. Active pallbearers included 8 F Bodine, Rufus Cherry, Jay Robinson, Charlie Dunn, James Thomar, and Malone Cooley.

Fayette Teachers Threaten Walkout Over Pay Demands

Phenix City Couple Jailed At Elba As Robbery Suspects

Phenix City residents Homer J. and Dorsey Blakely were jailed in Elba on suspicion of involvement in Alabama robberies and a $25,000 Columbus safe robbery. Sheriff Tillman and Police Chief Harper arrested them after a tip linked them to crimes in Troy and Montgomery. Evidence in their possession suggested possible involvement in a jewelry store robbery. they claimed to have just returned from San Antonio and to live in Phenix City.

Police And Firemen Net $825 From Circus

The Dothan police and fire departments raised 825 90 from the Buck Owens circus sponsorships over four days, short of the 4 000 hoped for. Chief Ryan and Chief Craughon noted $225 went to each department from ticket sales and $600 from circus program advertising. additional receipts included 120 for selling 60 book packets of tickets, with the 825 to be split between departments for relief funds.
