Pittsburgh Industry Boom With New Plants Expanding
Pittsburgh amid postwar slowdown sees rapid industrial growth as fifty new plants started last year and many more are planned for 1949. Major investments include General Motors new body plants, Keslsey-Hayes Wheel Co expansion, Continental Can Co megaproject, Westinghouse atomic lab, and billions in utility upgrades. Large steel, chemical, and coal ventures drive employment, with firms like Jones & Laughlin, Crucible, Heinz, and the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co pursuing new facilities and processes such as gasification of coal for future energy.
