Forgotten New York Mansion May Glitter Again With UNO
The northeast corner of Manhattan at 50th Street and Madison Avenue houses a once grand mansion built by Henry Villard. Designed by McKim Mead & White with interiors by Stanford White, the structure, dwarfed by skyscrapers, could be offered to the UN Security Council as interim headquarters. Villard’s courtyard plan and expensive six-house project marked the property’s dramatic urban evolution. Oswald Villard, son of the builder and former editor, welcomed UNO’s use and hoped the block would eventually be taken over by the organization.
