France flood disaster leaves hundreds dead homeless

Across southern France from Beziers to the Garonne floodwaters receded revealing a vast ruin. More than 400 dead and 10 000 to 12 000 homeless as towns, farms and vineyards were devastated. Rescue teams struggled with blocked transport and scarce food while launches brought aid up the Garonne to thousands marooned.

Cabbage salad and custard dishes amid shipwrecked debris

The fragment lists cabbage salad, baked custards, soup and mold recipes then shifts to a maritime disaster report. It notes at least twelve men abandoning safety to help others and dying, with debris filling the Tarn and Gareabe rivers, making navigation dangerous and many animals lost.

Former Yale president Hadley dies during world cruise

Dr Arti Twining Hadley, Yale University president emeritus and noted economist, died at 73 in Kobe Japan after a two day illness from pneumonia on a world cruise. He led Yale from 1809 to 1921, retired to focus on economics, writing and lecturing. Survived by widow Mrs Hatley, son Morris, daughter Mrs Nicholas Moseley, and other members. Body to be flown to New Haven for burial with services at Battell Chapel and Grove Street Cemetery.
