Alabama faces potential loss of federal funds if welfare financing is not changed. State Welfare Director Laula Dunn warned during a $61,000,000 budget presentation that current local dollar driven disbursement skews aid, delaying federal matches and requiring major reform to meet anticipated home relief and other federal bills. She outlined eight sources of welfare money and noted need-based distribution is impractical under current rules, urging a revised plan to raise pension and increase federal control.

House vote urged on veterans pension plan
United States House debate loomed as Rep Rankin proposed sending a bill to the floor for a nationwide pension program for all veterans. The plan would grant $90 monthly pensions at age 65 for World War I and II veterans, with an estimated cost of 109 billion dollars over time. Critics warned about economic impact while Rankin claimed savings from reduced state pension rolls. The rules committee indicated a slow path to floor consideration, with opposition from House leaders and the Truman administration. The exchange included questions about pensions for Spanish American War veterans and potential shifts in debate strategy. Back the Red Cross.
