Attorney General Albert Carmichael and Tuscaloosa County Attorney Tom Ward say packing plants do not qualify for tax exemptions under a 1946 act aimed at new industries. Courts construe exemptions against the taxpayer, so a packing plant is not exempt. Ward sought the opinion after a request from Morgan Packing Company of Tuscaloosa for tax relief.
