City Residents Turn To Country Stores For Food
Alabama residents face food shortages as farmers cling to scarce staples. Tenants push to share meat lard flour and sugar, while boll weevils threaten crops in Southeast Alabama. Veterans receive priority for scarce farm equipment from War Assets Administration, leaving non veterans unlikely to obtain machinery as supply remains limited. Agricultural officials warn of continuing hard times for farming families.

Weevils Invade South Alabama
Auburn reports a large boll weevil outbreak in Southeast Alabama cotton fields. Entomology officials urge immediate action on infested cotton south of Montgomery, recommending 7 to 10 pounds of calcium arsenate per acre in three dustings five days apart, with reapplications after rain. Do not use DDT as it harms cotton and is ineffective against boll weevil.
