A AP poll of 98 senators shows 51 ready to vote aye with 18 undecided and 5 likely aye. Strong cross party support from 35 Democrats and 16 Republicans boosts ratification prospects as Senate readiness grows to back the Charter as the world body debate continues.
A noon explosion at the Faulkner Ice Plant in Dothan damaged a building, caused ammonia spread and an estimated 350000 pounds of meat storage to be threatened. Firefighters contained the blaze after about an hour with significant water damage and ongoing checks of stored meat. Work to rebuild began, with normal operations expected to resume soon.
Houston County's board of revenue approves hiring an assistant engineer to be named by County Engineer Mullins as part of a large ad building and paving program. The vote was 3 to 1 with L E Boswell dissenting. Other actions include fuel purchases, tractor acquisitions, and building alterations to house workers in the county road program.

The Dothan Lions Club Scout Hut at 62 Edgewood Drive opens for public inspection from 2 to 7 p m. The community center plans include Sunday school classes and facilities for all groups, with expansion plans for lights, barbeque pit, and outdoor recreation. Lions Club members helped with construction and work on the concrete floor and bridge.
Patrolman Barney Patterson investigated a crash at Main and Cates in which Charlie B. Hall age eleven and Lester David Hall age twelve sustained minor injuries. They were treated and released from Onthen hospital. Driver Jt Mall of the automobile and Wilburn Gainey of Chipley, Fla, the truck, were not charged. Both vehicles were damaged and damages settled amicably.
Rumor that the Panama City Florida Gulf Coast bridge had fallen was false. The span remained in service after a precautionary inspection showed only negligible damage. Traffic was briefly held as a tow vessel passed beneath during the event.
Manila dispatch reports the Luzon campaign nearing a swift climax as the U S 37th Infantry Division moves within 17 miles of Guerrilla forces at Tuguegarao, facing about 20 000 Japanese in the valley. Guerrillas led by Col Russell W Volckmann have held the town and halted attacks while awaiting relief.
Gen Arnold, visiting Okinawa, warned Japan will have little industry by fall and face mass bombing. The Weather Bureau in Miami reports a gulf hurricane centered about 74 miles southwest of Cedar Keys Florida with winds up to 100 mph. It is moving northeast at 2 to 14 mph and should move inland between Tampa and Cross City by Sunday daylight. Destructive winds and dangerous gales are forecast from Punta Gorda to Titusville and northward along the Atlantic coast overnight into Sunday.
FBI agent announces that 25 year old Hay er confessed to the Parker Bank and Trust Co robbery in Cullman Alabama. He pled guilty at a Saturday hearing and was held on 25000 bond to await transfer to Walker County jail in Jasper. Gordon Bracken, 42, of Gatland, also jailed on 25000 bond after being arrested nearby. he is Hagen’s brother in law. The crime occurred Wednesday afternoon during a lunch hour when six bank employees were out. He admitted to taking nearly 7000 dollars from the bank.
