Plan to destroy 10 million acres of cotton

Secretary Wallace unveils a sweeping plan to plow up 10 million acres of cotton nationwide to curb surplus. The program offers rental payments and options on government owned cotton with a six cent per pound strike price for options and up to 2.4 million base in output. The campaign targets 2 million bales minimum, with about 54 million dollars in rentals to farmers and a total program cost depending on farmer participation.

Two-Cent Stamps Effective July 1

Postmaster General Farley signed an order restoring the local two cent rate on first class postage starting July 1. The move lowers the existing three cent local rate under a new law, aiming to boost mail volumes and avoid furloughs for postal workers. The Associated Press reports that Connecticut rejected repeal and New Hampshire and Iowa moved toward a divided stance on repealing the Prohibition amendment. Electrical Storm Hits Ashford Area Burns Barn Down

A lightning storm near Ashford between 3 30 and 4 30 a m caused a barn near Achford to burn to the ground and damaged an electric meter at a dwelling occupied by Ed Pate. The storm lasted nearly an hour with strong winds. no injuries were reported.

County teachers get checks today

Two hundred and twenty nine employees of the Houston county school system including teachers and bus drivers shared in a 16 000 payroll today. W Johnson superintendent of education announced. The payroll leaves the teachers due back pay for arty one month. Money to pay the salaries was obtained through a loan made by the county board of education. Taxes for this year were pledged for the loan. Salaries for the remaining month will be paid when past due taxes are paid Mr Johnson said.

Congressman Almon in Critical Condition

Edward F. B. Almon representative of the Eighth Alabama District suffered a severe heart attack and was listed in critical condition in Washington. Almon, from Tuscombia, has long fought for government operation of the Mobile Ship Shoals and has served in Congress since the 64th term.

July 4 Deadline For Tax Payments Despite Penalty

Houston county taxpayers will receive tax notices by July 4 with a 75 cent extra cost if past due amounts are not paid. Tax collector 8S. A. Muling announced about 69 percent of 1922 taxes have been collected, leaving 49 percent unpaid and subject to notices.

Dothan Boys,14, Pedal to Panama City in Nine Hours

Charles Rush Jr and Billy Cannady both 14 say they set a nine hour record cycling the 90 mile Dothan to Panama City route. They started at sunrise 4 a.m and finished shortly after 1 p.m. The trip aimed to let Billy visit his mother Mrs Bert Cannady and they plan a return trip later in the week by the same bicycle conveyance.
