Pels New Hurler Turns In 3-Hitter
In a Southern Association tilt, New Orleans pitcher Bob Williams threw a three-hitter against Chattanooga, matching his perfect debut with another strong outing. Williams walked seven and struck out two, but earned the win as the Pelicans scored five on 12 singles. Chattanooga struck for three runs on three hits. Charley Gilbert of Nashville heated up with three hits in five at bats as his hot two-night stretch reached nine safeties in 12 tries. Birmingham stayed second with a 9-8 win over Atlanta, fueled by Fred Smith’s early RBI and the Crackers’ 14 singles. Additional deals included Ray Wilers joining Birmingham from Newark for two players and cash, and Larry Smith moving to Kansas City. Little Rock fell 6-2 to Knoxville. Some crab notes and a quirk about the Lapp family maintenance end the item.
