Bessemer Boy Killed Riding Bike in Collision

March Retail Sales Rise in Houston County

March retail sales in Houston County rose 34 percent from February, but trailed the 17.3 percent statewide gain. H. J. Chapman, area director, said 75.4 percent of Houston sales came from retail concerns with a 29 percent increase. Statewide, 66 percent of total sales were by retail concerns, up 16.6 percent. Other indicators above February included bank debits, postal receipts, building permits, savings deposits, and postal savings. declines occurred in demand deposits, mortgage recordings, some agricultural jobs, and work applications.
