Council Passes Meat Bill After Long Debate

Dothan city council approved amendments to the slaughtering ordinance after months of meetings and disputes. The key change cut the inspection fee for cattle from 50 to 35 cents while fees for veal and hogs stayed at 25 cents and sheep, lambs, goats and kids at 15 cents. Mayor I C Ezell appealed again to the city council to repair pipes and remove rust from the water. He cited recent complaints about rusty water unusable for bathing or drinking and supported immediate action with a $1,500 machine to clear impurities and protect poles, per R J Goodwin.

Engineer to survey plant for two diesel engines

An engineer from Jacksonville Florida will arrive next week to survey the municipal light and water plant for installation of two diesel engines to triple output before the Alabama Power Company contract ends June 20. Councilman J P Botts said the plan may cost less than 50 000 by buying used engines and the purchasing committee is authorized to proceed without further council action.

Man who stopped girl 15 guilty in county court

J B Ruges near Ashford pleaded guilty to assault and battery for stopping Flora McGowan 15 as she walked with her brother in a southern city street. Judge H K Martin sentenced him to six months in the penitentiary after a half hour neighborhood chase ended with his capture in a barn.

Probate Judge H. K. Martin reports no announces from Houston County for the state convention race on the 18th amendment repeal or retention. Today a letter on ballot printing arrived and says ballots must be started soon. Election day is July 18 with nearly a dozen statewide qualifiers. qualification deadlines remain unclear.

Mistrial Declared In Woman Lottery Case In North Carolina

A mistrial was declared in the case of Mrs. Fannie J. Richardson Thompson wife of a former Piedmont League umpire alleged leader of a lottery. Her ex husband Bor B. Richardson pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months.

Two Draw Sentences In County Court

William Hines received a three month penitentiary term and costs after a county court conviction for burglary. Elijah Johnson was convicted of assault and battery and sentenced to three months plus costs. W M Murdock faced a $280 fine after pleading guilty to violating the prohibition law.

Mattern Lands In Omsk After Record Flight Hold

Jimmy Mattern touched down in Omsk Siberia at 6 35 am local time after a 1400 mile Moscow to Omsk leg. He had earlier held a 54 minute Post Gatty record lead but stopped to allow the record holders to fly on. Mattern was 73 hours 15 minutes from Floyd Bennett field when he landed and planned to stay until tomorrow amid unexplained delays.

New Orleans girl kidnapped freed after brief captivity

Mise Marearet Breckenridge, a socially prominent New Orleans stenographer, was abducted Sunday and held about 24 hours while captors sought ransom. She was released near her home after convincing the men her parents could not pay. She says she was fed only thin soup during captivity.

Marchers at Dearborn dispersed by officers

Several hundred demonstrators, planning to camp at Dearborn city limits to present demands to Ford Motor Company, dispersed after Dearborn police and state officers laid siege precautions. No disorder occurred as authorities formed a strong line with tear gas canisters at the city limits.

House Accepts 25 Percent Cut of Appropriation

After a Democratic steering committee meeting Speaker Rainey said the House would accept the Connally 23 per cent veterans amendment independently of the offices bill or Roosevelt's substitute. Leaders would delay action on the Independent offices appropriation to allow Roosevelt to propose an alternative. The Connally amendment, already Senate approved, caps service-connected disability allowances at 25 per cent.

Escaped Convicts Terrorize Town in Arkansas Raid

A group of five to seven armed men, believed to be fleecing Kansas convicts, kidnapped night watchman W A Fore near Rison Arkansas. After alarms, locals patrolled as the band fled in two automobiles. Fore said the men planned to loot safes but authorities pursued without capture.

Bodies of Mother and Son Found Dead in Atlanta Home

In Atlanta on Monday Mrs. Carrie D. Hight, 52, and her son J. Lawrence Hight, 22, were found shot in their bed room. A coroner's inquest was ordered. Neighbors called Deputy J. Gordon Hardy who found the bodies. A gun lay near the boy. Notes reportedly indicate the son wrote lines about life and his mother. Mrs. Hight widow of Emmett Hight and a prominent figure in Atlanta.

Dance of Death Ends Night at St Helens Lodge Hall

P. C. Jacobson collapsed and died at a lodge hall during the final dance of the evening in St Helens Oregon. Police and investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the death as spectators watched in shock.

Senate Home Relief Bill Passed With Major Revisions

The Senate completed action on a 2.0 billion emergency home mortgage relief bill without a final vote record, adding key changes. It broadened aid to homes valued up to 25,000, set six percent interest on cash advances, and created a 200 million dollar capitalized Home Owners Loan Corporation with up to 7 billion in bonds, to operate for three years and assist homeowners via bond exchanges and partial value advances.
