Eight student government members served as hosts for a party honoring the sophomore class last week at Troy State Teachers College. A freshman party is planned for Tuesday. Jack Knowles in Elba heads arrangements. End of notice.
Marianna sheriff says he is holding two men for Georgia authorities in a car theft case. Officers identified the suspects as Debert H. Adams, 24, of Houston Texas, and Warren Harvey Lawn horn of Lexington Virginia. They were arrested near Marianna on a car stolen in Thomaston Georgia.
CARTERSVILLE Georgia 24 year old Robert Carver admitted robbing the Bank of Adairsville of 3371 yesterday after police counted the loot. He was picked up within an hour after handing a note demanding a donation. He fled in a taxi and was arrested here after a radio lookout. Carver said the taxi driver did not know of the holdup.
An explosion at a Berlin factory prompted German officials to attribute the blast to ethyl chloride after denouncing communist charges. A chemist claimed the plant produced only industrial goods. A French communique offered no cause or damage estimate. Lt Col Walter F Partin described thousands of injured Germans reporting for work.
A Midwest storm system killed a farm child and injured many as tornadoes and high winds swept the region. Lucille Ballweg, 10, died near Madison Wisconsin when a tornado struck the Ballweg family farm. Frank Ballweg and nine other children were injured. Fifty Girl Scouts narrowly escaped harm as the twister passed overhead. The Chicago weather bureau warned storms would continue with Lake Michigan port warnings and shipping alerts issued.
Cattle receipts about 2400 with few sales. most cattle steady to up 50c to 1.00, good feeders 26.00 to 33.00, cows 16.50 to 21.00, canners 14.00 to 16.50. Calves 18.50 to 28.00, hogs 20.00 to 28.50, sows 16.00 to 23.00, buyers active despite light week.
Number 19 mond and Wright unite with States Righters urging a return to constitutional government and preservation of state rights in domestic matters such as law enforcement voting employment practice and segregation. The Philadelphia convention is charged with being controlled by political bosses and manipulated to thwart Democratic will.
New Orleans AP reports cotton futures eased amid weekend liquidation as selling pressure rose. Prices showed slight firmness for nearby contracts while delays and mixed bids kept values uneven across months.
Superintendents and principals from the third AEA district will attend the Southeast Alabama School Council work conference at Troy State Teachers Aug 4-8. Houston County Superintendent Solomon Baxter will speak Tuesday on Operations and Maintenance of Public Schools. Other speakers include Dr. Meadows, Dr. Pierce, Dr. Smith, Dr. Irvine, and Frank Newell.
In Lanier Georgia a locomotive struck a jeep stalled on the Seaboard Airline crossing. Mrs. H B Brewton Bryan County public welfare director was injured as the train struck the vehicle sending it flying and she ran to escape. She suffered severe cuts and was hospitalized in Savannah.
Henry A. Wallace, the Progressive candidate, accused President Truman on a National Broadcasting System broadcast of calling Congress into a special session to appear dramatic and to split the Progressive vote. He said the move would scapegoat Congress for Truman’s alleged weak leadership.
Lt. Carl Folsom, 41, brother of the governor, killed in Luzon July 28, 1945, will receive military funeral services at 3 p.m. at Elba Baptist Church. Burial follows at Tabernacle Cemetery near New Brockton. National Guard unit led by Capt. Henry Dorsey will participate. Survivors include two sisters Mrs. Ross Clark and Mrs. Ruby Ellis and three brothers Fred Bob Cecil. Governor's office closed today.
Senator Robin Swift of Escambia backs adding another penny to the Ras tax amid an informal highway committee probe. If a special session occurs, the governor may push for an additional constitutional amendment to fund old age pensions and school salaries, with tax receipts running about 2 million above projections.
Senator Taft says the special session could end by August 7 and Republicans may move to pass Truman's credit curbs while avoiding price controls. He notes the Southern Democratic filibuster against anti-poll tax legislation could end, a victory for the South. Republicans, Tobey and Wolcott, favor stronger credit restrictions, with debate on extending them beyond the Federal Reserve system. President Truman warns of fresh depressions if Congress delays action. Dewey witness proposal is rejected unless all candidates are invited.
The Farben defendants receive prison terms from four to eight years with time served credits as authorities convict on charges of plundering occupied territories and using concentration camp prisoners as forced labor. Fritz Termeer and others face multi year terms while some defendants are released immediately. A separate note mentions a Solomon Islands mint on Auki island near Guadalcanal.
The Air Force moves bomber and fighter squadrons to New York airfields for a 35 minute public demonstration at Idlewild to showcase enough air power for atomic devastation of East Coast cities. President Truman and Gov. Dewey will attend with other officials as Russia is excluded from the Moscow show tradeoff. The parade includes 137 bombers said to carry atomic weapons and threaten major towns along the coast.
In the 1948 Cancer Control Fund drive, three of five Wiregrass counties met or exceeded quotas. Alabama raised $153,093.30 against a $137,000 goal, placing the state among the top ten nationally. Coffee County led the Wiregrass with 119.7 percent of its goal, Houston County reached 108.5 percent, Dale County met its 100 percent target, Henry County reached 90.2 percent, and Geneva County trailed with 43.4 percent.
The Senate battles over the anti poll tax bill as Republicans seek to invoke cloture to shut off debate. President pro tempore Vandenberg is expected to rule against cloture, risking a full Senate appeal while Southern senators prolong discussion. Taft predicts only a brief interruption for a homebound vote as discussion drags on. The Dixie bloc argues constitutional grounds, with no direct focus on racial discrimination.
CIO-PAC Chairman Jack Krolt praised the President after his nomination acceptance speech noting a new look. CIO Vice President Emil Hieve echoed that view and asserted Tabu can help build a strong Democratic party, adding support for Marry Truman despite past tensions.
The body of Private E. Griffith, twenty-two, of Fort Gaines, Ga., killed on Anzio Beachhead in Italy on August 9, 1944, will arrive Saturday for reburial. Funeral services set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Cotton Hill Baptist Church with American Legion directing graveside rites. Headland Mortuary in charge. Surviving are his mother Estelle Griffith and five brothers, three sisters, and several relatives.
Funeral services for Annie Sue Ready, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Odell Ready of 206 Linden Street Dothan, died in a local hospital. Dr W F Calhoun officiated at Kinsey cemetery with Headland Mortuary directing. Surviving are the parents and maternal grandparents G P Biggers Sr of Dothan and Hoste Ready of Blakely GA.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. in Haleburg for William Newton Skelton 75 who died at his home after a long illness. Rev. Hagler of Headland officiated with Masonic rites at the grave. Interment was by Headland Funeral Home. Surviving: two sons Oscar of Haleburg route one and J. R. of Columbus Georgia. three daughters Mrs. J. H. Melton and Mrs. H. V. Nolen of Columbus and Mrs. C. L. Elbert of Headland. brother E. N. Skelton of Haleburg route one.
A World War II dead, Pvt Henry W Wright, will be honored Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Ramer church with full military rites. Officiating ministers are Rev J W Collins of Hartford and Rev Oral Dorriery of Slocomb. Burial will follow in the Ramer church cemetery, conducted by the Dothan post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Funeral services were held at the Brookins home in Cairo for F Neil Watkins 56 who died Thursday morning in Dothan at his sister Mrs F C Brookins home. Dr W F Calhoun officiated with Dr Raney leading cemetery rites at Oak Lawn Bainbridge Ga. Watkins a Blairsville native lived in Cairo 30 years and worked for the Cairo Messenger. Active pallbearers were Cairo men H H Wind Jr Robert Wind Perry Chason Clyde Nettles T F Proctor J W Shaw George Thomas Jr and Pete Pyles.

Russians accuse city officials of sabotaging Soviet feeding efforts as only 3,800 Western Berliners sought ration cards in the Soviet sector. U S Ambassador Smith returns to Moscow for guiding negotiations while Berlin socialists press for ironclad guarantees against another blockade.

MONTGOMERY AP How ard Rice, a 27 year old Greene County Negro, began serving a life sentence after Gov James E Folson saved him from the electric chair. Rice’s death penalty was commuted to life in prison seven hours before execution as the state sought a sanity test. His mother and others testified Rice had a weak mind. Rice was convicted of the shotgun killing of John Means, another Negro, at Eutaw last August. Assistant Attorney General Bowen Simmons and Circuit Solicitor T S Boggs called the killing cold blooded with no self defense.
August 9 1948 is the last day to file lump sum death benefit claims under the Social Security Act for qualified individuals who died outside the United States between December 6 1941 and August 10 1946. Dothan Social Security Manager Harry N Scott cautions that claims filed after this date cannot be paid unless extended by prior law. The 1948 amendment temporarily extended the limit by two years from the date of the amendment, expiring August 9 1948. survivors are urged to seek assistance at Room 17 Merrill Building Dothan Office.
In Douglas Georgia an escaped convict named Lucius Clark, 28, who wounded Trooper W B Hitchcock Jr, 32, of the Tifton patrol was shot to death by officers after the suspect refused to surrender. Clark had escaped July 7 from Johnson County public works camp.
Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok told the 37 member State Council that Arabs caused UN boundary impracticality and Israel will adjust borders by gaining territories not shrinking them. He announced plans to place Jerusalem under Jewish sovereignty and rejected Bernadotte’s demilitarization plan. Shertok said refugees will not be allowed to return yet and Israel will seek heavy indemnities for war losses.
The body of former Governor Fred P. Cone will be buried today at Old Prospect church cemetery along the Suwannee river in the Cone family plot where other pioneer kin lie.
Atlanta police issued the description Tarzan for a shirtless cat burglar with long black hair. He broke into 64 year old Mrs. R A Campbell's apartment last night, choked her after a challenge, and jumped from a window.
