Defective German Gas Bombs Destroyed
More than 100 defective German mustard gas bombs from the freighter Francis Lee were destroyed on Horn Island off Mississippi by Chemical Warfare Service officers. Coast Guard confined a five mile zone, while two Washington officers supervised and ensured no contamination reaching land. Destruction used burning trenches with oil. Lt. Col. William J. Allen Jr. stayed days to test for residues. The Francis Lee then sailed to Charleston with about 800 tons to be destroyed at sea. 85 workers, mostly Black stevedores, were burned during handling.
