Soviet offensives spread across Poland and the Baltic region as Russian forces advance near Warsaw and along the San River while jug river and Lublin groups coordinate. Reports indicate renewed pressure from the north toward Riga and Bialystok, with a broader push toward the belt of Germany and the Carpathians.
Front reports indicate Allied and Red Armies making decisive advances on multiple fronts. Allied forces break through beachhead defenses and push toward armor ready lines while advancing toward key positions. Houston County farmers plant tobacco as a growing money crop. About 45 acres are in tobacco this year, the largest six year total, with 13 growers, including A. D. Ussery, and several others listed. Yields last year averaged over 1,000 pounds per acre, with most crop sold in Georgia.
Argentina recalls its ambassador to Washington, Adnan Escobar, after a communique says U S statements on Argentina’s position impair dignity. The recall follows dispatches reporting the State Department’s views on Argentina amid wider regional consultations.
Birmingham attorney R DuPont Thompson, leader of a group pushing Independent Democrat slate for November, says activity is under way in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Dr Gleason Archer of Boston, head of the American Democratic National committee, will address the Birmingham gathering.
AP report describes American patrols in the St Lo area of France using a sneaky 750 yard advance to outflank and rout German patrols. Capt Raymond H Hitchcock notes Germans moved in small, spaced groups. Americans capitalized to seize territory for free. Seven Nazis killed by a concentrated American volley after misjudging American strength.
War dispatch reports Allied forces close to Florence within 16 miles after steady advances on the Italian battlefront. Fifth Army and Eighth Army report gains south and east of the Arno, with Strada and Monte Fili captured and German forces pulling back along the Arno defenses. In the Pacific, Marines seize most of Tinian while Guam airstrips are isolated and bombardments continue on Yap, Palau, and other islands as Nimitz forecasts a broad campaign.
Allied forces launched a renewed offensive in Normandy with British Canadian tanks and infantry driving south of Caen while American troops advanced near Le Havre and St. Lo. The drive aimed toward Falaise on a four mile front as Allied air and artillery supported the push amid good weather.
Houston County Selective Service Board No. One assigns two induction calls for July 27 and August 15. Acting clerk L. C. Flynn said notices were mailed. registrants listed include Fuller, Northington, Wilson, Higgins, Seymore, Paulk, Jones, Smith, Dansey, Tew, Barksdale, Hicks, and Webb, Harper, Thomell, Ogletree, Barkley, Wright, Hoffman, Heima, Trammell, Snellgrove, Venable, Arnald. Inductees will be assigned to Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard.
In Kansas City AP report Sen. Truman recalls old Missouri supporters as he awaits a possible meeting with President Roosevelt to discuss the fourth term campaign. Censorship hides movement details while local Democrats speculate on a midwestern rendezvous and a joint program.
The State approved consolidating Houston County Selective Service Boards One, Two, and Three. Offices will be in the Farmer-Porter Building with shared clerks while each board retains identity and records. The move aims to cut costs as draft calls have declined from early levels.
Chicago showcases community cooperation through four centers in the loop including a beach club and hotels for Negroes and general service member facilities. Operated by the Chicago Commission on National Defense under Mayor Edward J. Kelly, the centers offer free meals, beds, and a do as you please policy with volunteers making up 7 percent of staff, drawing praise from service members and their families.
