District parley outlines new works program setup

A meeting of NRS district office managers for eight southeast Alabama counties was held in Dothan on Thursday. B R Darrow explained the works program and the employment service role, with Barbour Pike Dale Henry Coffee Geneva and Houston counties represented. A J Spears said policies would remain unchanged as the service shifts to a district office structure. Spears noted the NRA ties, that WRS placement reached 37 000 workers in Alabama since July 1934 with 6 000 into private employment, and that 60 percent of highway contracts went to out of state firms, now limited to state labor on federal aid projects.

WPA to Get Alabama Out of Mud Promising Politicos Blush

MONTGOMERY July 25 AP Politicians long vowed to lift Alabama from mud and the Works Progress Administration plans major road and bridge work. Ray Crom chief engineer for the Alabama Relief Administration said much of WPA funds for secondary roads will gravel and shore country roads previously built or repaired with RFC PWA or CWA money. He could not estimate miles surfaced but said it will be considerable. Gravel and chert will be supplied by counties and WPA labor will perform the work. There will be steel bridges and many permanent culverts replacing old wooden spans.

Wiregrass WPA project list totals 86,089 men to work

Wiregrass shares from the Alabama WPA program promise to put 334 workers to build armories, courthouses, airports, and roads as part of a state wide plan. The Montgomery compiled list shows 67 counties and 6 Wiregrass counties with 86,089 dollars and 127 workers assigned across armory, court house, airport, and roads projects. The plan aims to lift more than 25,776 people off relief and push Alabama’s total work relief above 25,776 workers.

Milton Frank of New York won the seventh annual Alabama deep sea rodeo King Fisherman title by landing the only tarpon, 28 and a half pounds, from the yacht Jeanne. Gov Bibb Graves caught a 105 pound shark but no prizes were awarded for sharks. Woman completes dangerous aerial stunt crossing border

Bernadine Lewin King, 27, surmounted a 23 minute 11 second upside down flight from Agde Caliente Mexico to San Diego California. Dressed with oil splatter on her face the stunt performer flew with only a belt for support. The feat set a near world record while making her the first woman to fly upside down over an international border.

An attempted burglary at the Driver home on South Andrews Street failed Wednesday night after an intruder tried to force the rear door.
