The article reviews a major party convention with focus on the two thirds rule, a Northern Negro voter plank, and foreign policy. It notes Southern resistance, expectations for Roosevelt’s fourth term, and overall satisfaction tempered by bruises and future healing. A forward look suggests victory and peace might accompany Roosevelt's next term.
A compact reflection cites Romans 15 14 praising brethren full of goodness and knowledge able to admonish one another. It also references Cicero’s idea that approaching the gods comes near through doing good to others.
The piece notes Franklin D Roosevelt again chosen as the presidential candidate with Harry S Truman as running mate after a contested renomination process. It reflects on public support for a fourth term amid war, Truman’s rise, and the political dynamics with Byrd opposing Roosevelt. It also mentions a salvage drive in Dothan, county juror accommodations, and wartime sentiments about Hitler.
An extended look at Chicago politicos, Ed Kelly and the Tribune, backing Governor Green, plus Roosevelt strategy at the Democratic convention. It notes Murphy’s federal actions, Kelly’s influence, and the broader cynicism of election years as party lines blur.
A Chicago scene on the convention floor shows Senator Barkley on a flying bridge above the crowd, basking in applause yet alarmed by the restless display of delegations below. The piece tracks the tension around Wallace's candidacy and the backstage maneuvering of Hannegan, Truman, and Roosevelt supporters amid the rowdy, hopeful demonstration by ordinary attendees.
Marianna city officials announce a cash basis operation after retiring a 6.307 million dollar note issued to Florida Public Utilities in January 1936. City Manager Meserve credits commissions 1941 42 and 42 43 for eliminating old debts and warns no invoices will be over 30 days past due, with bond debt reduced to 193000 and a 10 percent salary rise approved.
The writer reflects on encounters with disabled beggars in Dothan and a bad impression of a touring con or scam, then shifts to wartime letters from parents and friends. He praises sympathetic readers, hopes for reunions, and urges sending home addresses so he can write to service members. Doris Hollis, WAVES, and Hollis children overseas are noted as examples of sacrifice.
