Vierheller Hid Zoo Pioneer Strives for Bronx Rivalry
Saint Louis native Vierheller left school at 12 to be a telegrapher and rose to direct the Saint Louis Zoo after 1924. He studies zoo science, spends every day at the zoo, collects rare animals, and imagines shipping live animals home to reduce voyage time. He aims to exceed the Bronx Zoo in scope and influence while pursuing a plan to fly animals back to the United States. A river wheel trophy was gifted to Hotel Lafayette by the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivernes, to be kept in the River Museum if ever disposed of. The Charles F Richardson, built at Hays Pennsylvania, was dismantled in Cincinnati in 1943 after many years of service.
