Navy To Expand WAVES Recruitment In Shore Roles

Plans announce a four week drive to recruit women into the WAVES and Coast Guard, replacing men on sea duty with shore assignments. Petty Officer J. Ho Hutchins led the effort, aiming to run through August 13 with a focus on women in the 3 and M ratings to bolster naval staffing.

Military Funeral For Pri Dewey R. Lee

A military funeral was held Tuesday at 2 o clock for Pri Dewey B Lets Lee at Sardis community near Enterprise. Chaplain from Camp Rucker presided. Lee, born in Chancellor, joined the MP service July 8, 1343 at Fort Storey Virginia. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs J M Lee of Jay Florida and sister Dorothy Jean Lee. Burial at nearby cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home of Enterprise in charge.

WAVES training centers aim to reach 41000 enlisted and 7500 officers

The WAVES, formed July 1942, plan to have 41000 enlisted women and 7500 officers by end of 1943. Training centers in sixteen locations already hold about 16000 women at once, with identical curricula to men except for shipboard duties. New ratings include specialist (1) for utility tasks and provisioning, with job training at schools.

Plans for whisky rationing registration to begin next month were outlined by Hugh Cottle acting ABC board administrator. All residents aged 21 or over may receive ration cards with a pint weekly limit and items including whisky rum gin and brandy. Florida WAVE Miss Wilsie Olivent Stationed in D. C.

Florida WAVE Pharmacist Mate Miss Wilsie Olivent daughter of H. E. Olivent of Chatta hoochee Florida is now stationed at the Naval Air Station Anacostia in the infirmary. The Eighth Naval District public relations office announced today. Olivent worked as a clerk and bookkeeper before enlisting in the Navy. She was employed at Napier Field Subdepot Supply Dothan and the Exchange.

Houston County Reports June Youth Registrations

Thirty one eighteen year old youths in Houston County were registered by the three Selective Service Boards last month and ten have been registered so far this month. Board One reported ten, Board Two ten, and Board Three twelve for last month. Since July 1, Boards One and Two have registered three youths each and Board Three four. Failure to register is a violation of the law with severe fines and imprisonment. names of failures will be turned over to Federal authorities.

Burning Rags Prompt Call For Firemen

Smoke poured from a two story building at 311 West North street yesterday and firemen traced the blaze to a stove on the second floor. A nearby observer thought the building ablaze. The fire started when water in a boiling pot steamed away. No damage reported.

Chaplain Charles K Johnson, assistant post chaplain at Napier Field, promoted to captain by Colonel James L Daniel Jr. Johnson, a Kalamazoo native, has served at Napier Field since December after Harvard Chaplain School and previously led religious studies at Alma College.
