Auto Safest Place For Refuge When Lightning Strikes
Washington AP reports National Geographic advises taking shelter in a car during lightning storms due to its steel body conducting electricity away from occupants. It cites odds of being killed by lightning in the U.S. at about one in 368,000, notes 44,000 daily storms worldwide, and mentions lightning temperatures up to 27,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It also explains cloud to cloud strokes are common, with flashes racing 100 miles between clouds and sometimes striking the same place twice.

Lightning power and thunder reach far and wide
York City sees lightning move up from the ground and strike repeatedly in minutes, with current flowing between charges. Thunder travels about 14 miles, while artillery sounds travel farther. Lightning creates vast fertilizer potential by pulling nitrogen from the air each year.
