AP reports 240 plus deaths on Independence Day with 81 drownings down from last year due to cool weather. Fireworks caused 10 fatalities, automobile accidents 111, and the Middle West led with 99 deaths.
Chief Zeiglar announced annual free showers for children at the corner of W Troy and N Alice streets each Thursday at 3 pm. The area will be roped off and no age limit is set for participation. The program, begun last year, offers a one hour water fun event for all city children.
James Mattern and Bennett Griffin aimed to beat the world circumnavigation record set by Wiley Post and Harold Gatty. Several Dothan residents dodged injuries during the Fourth of July as no major accidents were reported. Harvey Searcy fell from a boat at Dead Lakes Florida and was pulled back aboard by Carl Newton after a fall into the water. About 15 pounds of fish chained to Searcy's leg slowed his surfacing.

Farah Autrey an 18 month old girl was slightly injured after stepping into East Main street and being struck by a truck driven by A L Lane. The child was treated at a hospital and discharged after first aid.

Mrs. Gilbert Wyatt and her son were listed in satisfactory condition after their car was struck by a truck and overturned while traveling from Tampa to Dothan. Wyatt’s husband and another son recovered at the home of Wirratt’s father, QO. L. Wyatt, as the family remained nearby.
A tornado ripped through Washington Kansas killing at least five people and injuring more than 15. Mayor Edgar Bennett said 50 businesses and 75 residences were leveled or damaged. The tornado destroyed the courthouse and many schools while power lines were knocked out amid rescue efforts.
