In North Dakota, voters approved a measure nearly banning Catholic nuns and priests from teaching in public schools and prohibiting religious garb in schools. From 1,846 precincts the tally was 83,370 for and 78,031 against the ban.
Singer Roy Acuff announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination as governor of Tennessee. He said if nominated in the August 5 primary he would go into the general election with everything he has.
Montgomery AP A columnist from Folsom's own tabloid raps Governor Folsom for inaction against the Ku Klux Klan. The piece cites private promises to revoke the Klan's charter if it acted up and questions why investigators have not been sent. It notes recent Klan actions in Jefferson County including a raid on a camp, and calls for officials in Birmingham and the state to act. Governor Folsom was vacationing and not available for comment.
Abbeville Meary County Board of Education accepted the resignation of I F A Marvey the principal at Woadland schools. Superintendent J A Roberts called Harvey’s accusation that he was pressed to seek other employment for political reasons absolutely false. Roberts defended his conduct saying there was no truth to the charge and denied threats to penalize schools over employment requests.
The Nathan City Personnel Board will hold a special meeting tomorrow to hear the appeal of former traffic patrolman Rish, dismissed for rude and discourteous conduct after a warning. Police Chief Eddie Kelles recommended the dismissal. Joel Wilson, the city personnel director, said the board would convene in the commissioners chamber at 10 a.m. The case was brought by Rish and involves the termination of a patrolman serving on city streets.
New York City bans pinball machines and other gaming devices citywide after Mayor Willem O Dwyer signs a new law. The mayor calls the machines breeding grounds for crime racketeering and corruption of youth.
