Alabama lawmakers convene a special session to address refinancing a $20 million state debt and securing funds for public schools. The plan includes issuing interest bearing warrants, restoring the state income tax and a sales tax, plus cost studies and a sinking fund from gas tax revenue.
Former New York Governor Alfred Smith says he would not accept a cabinet position in the Roosevelt administration noting he is as busy as he wants to be. Smith travels with the railroad commission to Washington to obtain ICC guidance on railroads.
Smiles spread across Houston county teachers as they left the office of C W Johnson superintendent of education. The payroll totaling 16456 represents the county's share of a $1 000 000 release from the state treasury this week with checks payable immediately.
Absence of key personnel delayed the typhoid fever survey in this section. A letter to county health officer Dr. F G Granger from Washington public health officials explains the director of the one year fever study is in South Dakota gathering data and could not report on the opening day. Equipment has been shipped to Dothan and the survey is expected to start by the first of next month.
Maynardville State Bank reopened Friday after suspending business last Friday. Vice-president R. V. Beeled said the bank has resources to meet every demand. It is the first of four suspended Knoxville area banks to resume operations.
William Beebe, Baldwin County representative and administration follower, has been in Montgomery for over a week reporting work on revenue measures for introduction. The opening days must address clerkships and a possible committee change as well as seating for a new senator and up to four new representatives depending on the house ruling on whether Gullat and Smith of Lee County legislated themselves from office by a county transfer bill last session.
In Panama City Florida on January 28 a motor truck went through an open draw on a bridge over St Andrews Bay. Driver Doc Hoskins escaped by leaping to the bridge as the truck fell over the edge. Coy Brown, a Negro worker, failed to escape and disappeared into 50 feet of water. his body was not recovered.
The first 39 railroads to report for December show aggregate net railway operating income of 17.746 million dollars, up 3 percent from 17.161 million in December 1931. Twenty four carriers reported improvements over the prior year.
Proponents said petitions seeking a commission form of government will be filed Monday after signatures are checked against the poll list. A total of 554 names were collected, about 76 over the required amount. Voters warned to pay poll tax by Wednesday to be eligible to vote on the change.
In Indianapolis a jury found Marie Winiger entitled to $100 from a detective agency for a misidentified kiss report. The agency had shadowed Lawrence Winiger instead of her husband Karl Hamilton and reported the kiss to Mrs Hamilton.
In Warm Springs Georgia on January 28 President Roosevelt pushes a broad domestic program for his March 4 inauguration. He aims for economy and efficiency through a drastic government reorganization. No extra session plans yet, but he may call one if farm relief prohibition and budget balance measures fail.
The Chester R. Vickery post of the American Legion will begin a membership drive Monday with a 250 member goal. The campaign runs through Thursday night, featuring a speech by George Grant of Troy on benefits for former soldiers and local Legion activities at the clubhouse on South Oates Street.
An explosion attributed to anti fascist bombing killed Mrs John Disilvestro wife of the supreme minster of the Order of Sons of Italy in the United States and injured at least 12 others. The blast shattered windows two blocks away and wrecked the Disilvestro home while he was away. The injured included four Disilvestro children a woman secretary and seven nearby residents all with non life threatening injuries.
Occasional rains start the week then ease by midweek. Temperatures run near or above normal early, turning colder late in the week.
State attorneys filed an application to rehear the Court of Appeals decision reversing J. F. Elmore from six to eight years for a knife attack on L. Smith Dent. The court had remanded for a new hearing, and no rehearing date is set. The move briefly stays the appellate ruling.
Detroit Jan 28 AP The Briggs Manufacturing plant resumed some operations as 49 workers went back to benches while Ford Motor Co's suspension affected about 100000 workers nationwide. Officials expected a Briggs settlement by Monday and Ford plants to restart within hours after a settlement.

Members of the farmers evening school at Pleasant Plains will meet Tuesday night to finalize arrangements for a barbecue. Forty-one Houston county farmers received checks totaling $925 for selling 260 hogs in Dothan yesterday. Robinson and Reynolds of Donalsonville bought the hogs at various grades, paying $225 per hundred pounds for No 1s and smaller sums for No 2s roughs and No 4s. The next sale is slated for February 10.

A federal grand jury indicted 30 men in Montgomery including two sheriffs D B Chamblers Autauga and Ben Burch Russell on two counts each for protecting favored bootleggers. Deputies and bootleggers named in the indictments together concluded the weeklong inquiry along with a separate charge against Jack L Emory for passing counterfeit money. 83.3 M Webb of Chilton county served as grand jury foreman.
The American Petroleum Institute and the American Automobile Association urged the House Ways and Means Committee to oppose the Collier plan to extend the federal gasoline tax for another year.
