Sparkman Forecasts Congress Approval Of Housing Plan

Senator Sparkman forecast congressional approval of the administration housing plan to aid middle income families. The program would involve up to 2.25 billion dollars in long term mortgage guarantees with cooperatives and nonprofit groups building homes, while Sparkman argued private groups would still have work. Horace Russell of the United States Savings and Loan League denounced the plan as socialism but Sparkman claimed it would not exceed 250 thousand families and would not crowd out private finance. The Alabama senator received cautious support from Senator Flanders who called it better than an income tax proposal advanced by the Banking Committee.
