In Washington three Supreme Court justices recused themselves from ruling on private real estate covenants that bar Negroes and other minorities from white neighborhoods. Solicitor General Philip B. Perlman argued the covenants threaten democracy as six justices remained to hear the case.
Livestock totals reached 600 cattle 400 calves and 3900 hogs at eight major packing plants in Albany Columbus Moultrie Thomasville Tifton Ga Dothan Ala Jacksonville Fla and Tanlhaszee Fla Hogs sold steadily with prices listed by weight category including 180 240 lbs at 24 24.75 and up to 25 for some long hauled lots.
Market activity remains slow due to cold weather with salable cattle receipts around 500 and calves about 200. Prices show weakness across most classes, with bid ranges for hogs and sows mixed, while New Orleans cotton futures slip ten to forty five cents per bale, and New York cotton futures ease in late trading with March May and July quotes down from prior close.

About 60 syrup producers from the Jackson County area met at the county courthouse to plan a cooperative for syrup and honey. J. W. Malone led the session with speakers A. G. Driggers A. R. Johnson and G. E. Callaway. Plans include a blending plant for uniform color and flavor and small glass containers for marketing. In 1945 Jackson County planted 1391 acres in sugar cane producing about 256 950 gallons of syrup. Additional meetings will pursue final cooperative plans.
Enterprise special report: Mercer C. Shiver, resident of Enterprise for two years, died at Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, Monday night. Survived by widow, two daughters Shirley Ann and Imorene, son Luchell of Enterprise, brother Olen G. Shiver, and sister Mrs. T. A. Dekle of Chipley Florida. Funeral at Enterprise home with burial in Chipley Florida. Military funeral to be announced. Searcy Funeral Home of Enterprise in charge.

Camden New Jersey veterans sued Benjamin R. Donolow and his parents Tarac and Tillie over criss cross electrical plumbing and heating defects in homes bought from them. They sought to compel repairs after outages hot water failures and faulty plumbing caused problems in neighbor homes. The suit was withdrawn after an out of court settlement.
Two local veterans, Joe H. Woodham of 305 E Newton St and Joseph O D Brookins Jr of Napier Field, along with seven other Wiregrass men, were announced at the Army recruiting station. Brookins and Harold L. Broom of Hartford Route 2 and James L Whitehead of Hartford Route 1 were assigned to Tyndall Field Florida for Air Force duty. Others transferred to Fort Benning Georgia include Dewey A Sconyers of Enterprise Walter G Parker of Webb Harold R White of Hartford Route 1 Travis D Medley of Enterprise and Benjamin J Hughes of Ozark Route 3.

Gertes Long, an African American man whose three year sentence for grand larceny was affirmed by the Alabama Court of Appeals, has filed an application for probation in the Houston Circuit Court. Long was sentenced earlier this year in connection with the theft of a bilifold containing about 943 dollars.

Atlanta activated an unfinished propane plant to aid the emergency while Wisconsin and Florida faced relief delays as fuel oil and kerosene shortages bite. Weather reads across the South show record lows, with temperatures from 10 to 35 above zero in various cities including Macon, Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, and Miami. Florida remains an exception as warmer pockets appear elsewhere.

A tractor fire started from a backfire in the engine and sent firefighters to the Dothan Guano Company this morning. Fire Chief Floyd Harris said there was no damage.
