Alabamians In Washington By Wilbur Jennings
In Washington AP dispatch Wilbur Jennings reports Defense Department interest in the Tombigbee Tennessee Canal linking Tombigbee and Tennessee rivers as a potential military asset. Rep Carl Elliott of Jasper pushes a $10 million appropriation to start construction, citing strategic transport savings and near-term defense needs. The project, authorized 1946 with $180 million total cost, would create a slack water route Mobile to Cairo and beyond, reducing transport costs and linking major river systems. Alabama briefs note local political shifts, society events, and staff appointments related to shifts in congressional delegation.
