Drew Names Alabama Coach After Mississippi Release
Number 15 teams almost as a habit here was ill before fall practice last year and coached much of the 1946 season from a specially-rigged chair. He came to Alabama after head coaching at Chattanooga and backfield coaching at Georgia. Thomas, a Notre Dame quarterback under Knute Rockne, was a top pupil of the Rockne era. It had been an open secret here that Drew chose Thomas as his successor. Drew announced at Oxford that he was seeking release from his Mississippi contract to take the Alabama job.

Beck suggested five or six more votes might be secured, while Folsom and aides pressed rivals to withdraw. The Governor-elect, amid a flurry of hotel-room talks, said a sole Beck candidacy might be offered, though he expected the issue to be joined on the floor.
