Rapid City Air Base Key Jumping-Off Point for B-36 Flights
Rapid City Air Force Base emerges as the Strategic Air Command’s ideal jumping-off site for long-range B-36 bombers. Col Alfred Kalberer notes the base trains crews, stores cold-weather gear, and houses a growing fleet, with three more B-36s to join the eight already at Rapid City. The facility has spent about 9 million dollars on construction and maintenance since the war, including a $2,000,417 hangar to accommodate the bombers and plans for a permanent operations building. About 3,000 military personnel and 300 civilians are based there, with long-range, non-stop training flights emphasizing navigation, gunnery, and weather endurance.
