Rankin Opens 30th Term in Congress From Mississippi
NEA correspondent Peter Edson profiles John Rankin of Mississippi as he begins his 30th term. Rankin, a veteran gatekeeper for controversial positions, leads the Dies Committee revival while championing veterans’ relief and opposing civil rights measures. His long career hinges on populist appeals and opposition to racial reform, as Mississippi voters rally behind his stance despite critics.

Rankin’s bid blocked by Mississippi delegates in hotel caucus
The record shows Rankin clashed with Roosevelt policies in Congress and aimed to be Roosevelts running mate in two campaigns. His influence as a public power leader and rural electrification advocate is noted, while Mississippi delegates halted his vice presidential ambitions in the party caucus.
