Enterprise octogenarians find daily work in woods and poultry

W J Ellis 83 and B B Byrd 89, veteran residents of Enterprise, Alabama, keep busy with a stump wood and kindling business and a chicken dressing operation. Ellis buys and splits stumps into firewood selling for a dollar per bushel, earning about $1,000 each winter. Byrd dresses chickens for neighbors and hotels, charging 12 cents to 25-40 cents per bird, sometimes handling up to 200 in a single day. Both men began their ventures late in life, turning wartime need and hard work into steady, modest income well into their eighties.
