A tanker explosion off the New Jersey coast near Leonardo injures several and leaves eight listed as hurt. The Bun Ou Carmapang’s tanker Sunope suffers a fire but stays afloat as it’s towed toward Philadelphia. Cause under investigation by Navy officials in New York.
Houston County rationing officials announced the January tire quota with a total of 668 Grade One passenger car tires, a cut from the prior month. Other quotas include 677.50 or smaller tires for trucks and three large tractor implement tires, plus BER gallons of hardship gasoline.

Luallen, serving 10 to 20 years for burglary, had earlier implicated his former wife Wynons Kidd Luallen before confessing himself.
Allied forces push toward Mandalay with British spearhead in Kaduma 18 miles from Yeu and Yeu approach 76 miles from Mandalay. Mountbatten confirms Yeu movement while forces along the Bay of Bengal seize Rathedaung north of Akyab. minimal Japanese resistance only near Nambkhram as a new American task force joins the fight.
In his budget message Roosevelt emphasizes universal training, a permanent fair employment practices committee, and a rivers and harbors program akin to the Tennessee Valley Authority. Rayburn and Martin dampen pre-session talk of tax cuts, saying near-term tax relief is unlikely until wartime victory appears closer.
Clyde Lovern was named chairman of the Red Cross War Fund Drive by the Houston County Chapter executive committee. Last year’s drive raised 35000 dollars, with the county’s quota expected to rise slightly this year as the national quota decreased by 20 million dollars due to a reserve. Mullard Fillmore Caldwell took oath as Florida's governor becoming the state’s 2nd chief. Funeral services for Rex L. C. Carrol a 2 Negro pastor of Jacksonville who died yesterday will be held Friday in Troy. A native of Dothan he was a graduate of the colored high school. Survivors include his wife his parents the Rev M C and Sweet Valley Carroll 903 North Ball Street a sister Mattia Perkins and a brother J H Carroll. Burial will follow in the real cemetery.
War Department informs Mrs. John C Barber that Technical Sergeant Earle H Barber an engineer gunner on a Flying Fortress was captured by the German government after a mission to Vienna. Barber enlisted in 1939 after Dothan High School graduation and had served in Italy since February earning a Distinguished Unit Citation with his unit. He was reported missing in action over Yugoslavia October 3.
A sharp cold wave swept eastward from the plains, bringing snow flurries to the Midwest and blizzards to New York and Ohio. Temperatures plunged to 23 degrees below zero in Minnesota, with 21 above in Atlanta and heavy snow causing road closures, school delays, and hospital frostbite cases nationwide.
