The United States entered 1947 with fears of recession but produced a record peacetime year. Inflation rose with goods prices, while gross national product surpassed 226 billion dollars in 1947. Corporate profits reached about 16 billion, wages averaged around 1.25 per hour, and net farm income rose to 18.0 billion. Retail sales climbed, industry ran at high capacity, and autos faced steel shortages. The stock market remained largely steady, with AP averages fluctuating around the 60-stock line.
