Damages Awarded in False Arrest Suit Over 1929 Bank Robbery

Grady Pennington and Howard Hood were awarded 2650 dollars each by a circuit court jury for false arrest in connection with the 1929 Bank of Cottonwood robbery. They were jailed in Dothan about ten days before being released when two other men were charged. The cashier identified one plaintiff as a robber at arrest. the case began in 1930 and 25000 dollars in damages were originally sought.

280 County Farmers Sell 12 160 Pounds of Poultry at Sale

About 300 farmers participated in the poultry sales in Henry county. A total of 12 160 pounds of poultry was sold for 1 400 dollars. J H Witherington county farm agent announced today. Poultry sold at Headland totaled 3 000 pounds and brought 360 dollars, at Newville 2 980 pounds sold for 356 dollars, at Abbeville Tuesday 4 300 pounds brought 556 dollars. A poultry car was being loaded at Columbie today.

Alleged kidnapper and robber shot in Mississippi clash

In Bogalusa Louisiana a gun battle near McNeill Mississippi left one alleged bank robber kidnapper wounded. The suspect identified as J W Fort Worth and his companion Hill escaped into a swamp surrounded by deputies. The pair were linked to several south Mississippi robberies culminating in a Lumberton bank raid for about 5000 dollars.

Absentee Ballots Available In Writing Or In Person

Probate Judge Harry K. Martin announced voters must apply in writing or in person at the probate office to receive absentee ballots for the March 7 city election. Ballots will be issued tomorrow and only five days. no mail after March 2. All candidates were expected to qualify and names to appear on ballots.

Building operations in Birmingham doubled in January from December. The January permits totaled 583,327 dollars, up from 528,969 dollars in December, according to the AP report from Birmingham dated February 26.

Twenty Chop Wood In Campaign To Help Jobless

Twenty men cut wood on W. H. Horn’s farm seven miles south of Dothan and eight men did odd jobs in town to provide work for the jobless. Horn will donate the wood to welfare agencies if officials supply the workers. the wood will be distributed to poor families. The 20 woodchoppers were paid in script redeemable for groceries. A total of 225 had registered for work at unemployment headquarters. Additional donors include B. Glover, Mrs. J. EB Casey, and many local businesses and individuals contributing cash and goods to the unemployment fund and food program.

First round games of the Second District high school basketball tournament were held at the Dothan Athletic Club court with 16 teams from southeast Alabama. Dothan high, favored to advance, faced Kinston this afternoon while the Ariton versus Rawls nightcap was set for 6 7 30 p m. Quarterfinals are slated for tomorrow, with semifinals and final tomorrow night. The winner and runner up advance to Tuscaloosa to meet state district champions.

Former Dothan Man Dies In Birmingham Home

Wester Lee, 34, longtime Dothan resident and T. C. I. Co. employee, died at his Birmingham home this morning after several months illness. He survived by his widow and four children and was brother to W. B. Lee, F. B. Culver, and Mrs. R. C. Williams. Funeral planned in Birmingham Sunday.

Aged man in hospital after self harm attempt

Chesney Wood, 70, of Ashford route one, is in a Dothan hospital in serious condition after slashing his throat with a pocketknife yesterday. Financial difficulties were cited as the motive. Attendants say vessels were severed in his throat and windpipe exposed, but recovery is possible. he is a married farmer.
