Fraser River Sockeye Returns Through New Salmon Ladders
The Fraser River faces a strong sockeye run as pink and silver salmon flood toward spawning grounds. Engineers at Hells Gate built tall concrete boxes with inward-baffled water routes, enabling fish to pass during floods. The 1945 fishways survived a 60 foot flood, aiding the spring and four-year sockeye migration upstream.
