A damaged OCR fragment dated February 23 1945 includes soothing exhortations and scattered quotes from Thessalonians and a Benjamin Disraeli misquote. The text references light and community themes but lacks coherent reporting or identifiable people or organizations.
A nationwide drive urges a living memorial for World War II servicemen, focusing on a public park in Dothan and Houston County. The piece argues memory must be kept alive now, not after victory, to honor life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. It contrasts a park memorial with stone monuments and cites community unity, youth play, and public gatherings as lasting tribute. It also critiques royal travel excess while noting wartime rationing and postwar public sentiment.
A call urges Dolhas and Houston County to condemn land if needed and secure funds from city, county, and federal grants to build a memorial park. Plans include a playground, pool, community house, benches, paths, grass, trees, and flowers to honor all who served or died in World War II. The piece stresses early planning and lasting remembrance over cost.
A review of Allied wartime attitudes notes U S and British roles in France, with American troops often behind British news and propaganda. Criticism of OWI coverage by Rep Paul Shafer contrasts radio messaging and troop morale tied to entertainment. A light, tense look at Stettinius’s ceremonial swearing in and awkward moments with Rockefeller aides follows, ending mid-scene as a feuding report about Wroaskiemban heats up.
Wartime Washington faces transport woes as OWI chief Elmer Davis struggles to hail a cab. Army prints new currency for troops in France to fix exchange rates and boost remittances home. House committee on surplus property moots reform while Congress reshuffles offices. California Democrats back Outland and King for 1946 Senate bids amid New York political clashes.
Ernie Pyle writes from the Marianas about the tropical heat and living conditions for Navy and Seabees. He notes rooms in BOQs with canvas walls no glass windows and two beds, the famous American two-mattress beds, and a mix of officers and enlisted men greeting him. He recounts meeting Seabees and an Army Major who shared Sicily pasts and now acts as a press censor.
Irregular fragment hints at a personal notice or column snippet mentioning Irene Waller and a doctor or medicine, with stray phrases about aspirin and a cat. The readable text is incomplete, offering no clear event, date, or organization to anchor a proper summary.
The piece portrays Berlin encircled and bombarded while refugees stream in, predicting a brutal siege outcome. It recalls Leningrad’s 17 month assault, warns Berlin faces hunger, disease and relentless Allied bombing, and asserts Hitler will defend the capital to a bloody finish amid deteriorating municipal services and typhus fears.
A dense list of radio programs and showtimes across networks including mutual hour slots, AP News updates, musical orchestras, talk and variety hours, and dramatic features. Notable names include Bing Crosby Dinah Shore Frank Sinatra era acts, The Ink Spots, and The Lone Ranger drama with multiple orchestras and hosts referenced alongside news bulletins and public affairs segments.
