Rival school programs set before group differenc es in total

Two Alabama public school funding plans were before the state finance and taxation committee. Dr. J A Keller proposed 13 580 225 for seven months while Senator Shelby Fletcher and Rep Clint Harrison urged 11 151 420. Counties would get state funds to cover gaps and pay debts, with remaining five mills and poll tax used for other costs.

Houston county farmers may sign government cotton acreage contracts for 1935 in the last four days of next week. Dr. Edward Schumann of the University of Pennsylvania said six children were born to a Negro woman on the African Gold Coast. He displayed a photo sent by a medical missionary and cited a reliable authority for the eight day old sextuplets still living when the shot was taken.

Wiley Post Stratosphere Flight Ends In Mojave Landing

Wiley Post aimed to cross the continent in under eight hours aboard Winnie Mae, but a forced landing occurred at Muroc dry lake, 125 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Post, unhurt, reported a bent propeller plate as only damage. Lockheed crews were dispatched. The attempt used a six foot wooden belly skid to reach high speed.

Habeas Corpus Petitions Dropped as Lecil Johnson Released on Bail

Judge J Halstead quashed the habeas corpus petition and set Lecil Johnson at bail of 3000 dollars. Johnson posted the bond and was freed from the county jail where he had been held since the murder indictment. Henderson, a former Dothan plumber, was shot near Newton Springs last October while hunting on his father's farm.

Roof fire at Lilly Martin home causes minor damage

Firemen reported a small roof fire at the home of Lilly Martin, a Negro resident, at 715 FE Burdeshaw Street. No injuries noted and flames were contained to the roof area.

Influenza Claims County Health Officer Dr F G Granger

Listed among today’s influenza victims is County Health Officer Dr F G Granger confined to his Ashford home after two weeks of campaigning against the disease which had reached epidemic levels. He was the only health department case as county cases once totalled about 500. Granger had just said the disease was abating.

Kennamer Convicted of First Degree Manslaughter

Mellon attorney says government fails with case

In Pittsburgh on February 22 AP reports Frank J Hogan chief counsel for Andrew Mellon argued no pertinent evidence had been admitted in the $3,000,000 income tax fraud case. Hogan claimed the case is political persecution and cited testimony by Charles T Frussell. He accused Attorney General Cummings of pressuring the revenue department to pursue Mellon.

Biloxi shooting ends husband pursuit of estranged wife

In Biloxi Mississippi on February 22 police say Larry Clare 48 was shot dead as he opened his apartment door by a man later identified as Long 64 the husband who was arrested. Long admitted the shooting claiming it was for his wife who had fled. The coroner’s jury ruled Clare died of gunshot wounds.

Duncan elected Auburn president despite opposition

Dr. L N Duncan was chosen president of Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn by a 9 to 2 vote of the board of trustees. Victor Hanson and Charles Culver opposed the appointment, saying the choice would not be in the institution's best interests. The decision follows Dr Bradford Knapp's resignation in 1932 to lead a Texas college.
